Apparently with no surprise
Emily Dickinson
Apparently with no surprise To any happy flower, The frost beheads it at its play In accidental power. The blond assassin passes on, The sun proceeds unmoved To measure off another day For an approving God.
Of note
In 2008 the scholar Patrick J. Keane published a whole book built around this eight-line poem. Its title, Emily Dickinson's Approving God, comes from the poem's last words. When the poem first appeared in 1890, its editors called it "Death and Life."
