The Sick Rose

William Blake

O rose thou art sick.
The invisible worm,
That flies in the night
In the howling storm:

Has found out thy bed
Of crimson joy:
And his dark secret love
Does thy life destroy.

Of note

Benjamin Britten set this poem as the "Elegy" in his Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings (1943), written at the urging of Dennis Brain, then principal horn of the Royal Air Force's orchestra. Brain and tenor Peter Pears gave the premiere in London that October.
